A FUSION OF MOVEMENT

Stavna Ballet is a Richmond-based professional dance company founded in 2010 by Artistic Director, Shannon Hunter McConville. Stavna Ballet’s mission is to captivate, enrich and inspire our community and audience through breathtaking artistry that explores the fusion of contemporary movement and the grace of classical ballet.

We embody our mission by creating exceptional dance performances that captivate and inspire. We invest in the community by providing an outlet for local artists to express themselves through the art of dance and by inspiring young minds through engaging and interactive learning experiences.


 
 
We love the fact that  we can pop in to the studio during any class session and peep in a window to see dancers in a variety of classes that may be in session.  The openness of the studio allows parents, guests and siblings see what is being taught, how it is being taught and it is always amazing to see the accomplishments made just in  one session by all students just in the way the classes are taught.  Peeping in to see the works in progress are not a distraction at this studio as it seems to make the students thrive and strive harder because they know there may be an audience.

HEATHER BELL

Heather has trained and performed throughout the United States. Under the direction of Rose Barile at the Alpharetta Dance Theatre, she danced various lead roles and performed at venues including the White House and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Heather earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia and also had the unique opportunity to perform in the 2006 Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. In Richmond she is proud to have found a home dancing with the Stavna Ballet as one of the founding company members. Highlights from performing with the Stavna Ballet include, Queen of Hearts , Blue Bird,  and The Evil Queen in Snow White. 

KATHRYN CLAY

Raised in Missoula, Montana, Kathryn began dancing with the Rocky Mountain Ballet Theatre under the direction of ABT alumni, Charlene Campbell. Since the age of thirteen Katy has performed as a singer and dancer in several international tours, traveling Europe and China as both a Performer and Good Will Ambassador. At seventeen, she was selected as a principal dancer and featured singer with RMBT on an official USA State Department tour throughout the Guangxi and Henan Provinces and in Beijing presented by the National Ballet of China at the Tianquo Theatre. After graduating from the Academy, Katy trained two years at a musical conservatory in Vienna, Austria and has performed as a musical theatre artist in and around Vienna, including productions in the 2017 Wiener Festwochen. She has placed first and second at the Vienna International Ballet Experience and Ballet Beyond Borders competitions 2016, 2017, and 2018.  Her most recent performance tour took her back to China and included performances and collaborations in Beijing, Xi’an, and ChongQing this past September. This is Katy’s first season as a company dancer and she is thrilled to be joining the Stavna Ballet.

MADISON ELIZABETH CASE

Madison, a native of Kentucky, began her training in ballet, tap, jazz, and modern at The Dance Centre of Elizabethtown under the direction of Sherry Barnard. Alongside her additional training with Allegro Dance Theatre and Fleur de Lis academy, she performed in many musical theatre productions. In 2014, she was accepted to the Governor's School for the Arts as a dance major. She then moved to Chicago to dance with Ballet Chicago’s studio company and went on to dance professionally with Charlottesville Ballet and Manassas Ballet Theatre. This is Madison’s first season as a company member with Stavna Ballet and she is thrilled to dance the role of Dorothy in Stavna’s upcoming production of The Wizard Of Oz.

RACHEL DART

Rachel, originally from Texas, began her ballet training at the Allen Conservatory of Dance home of the Allen Civic Ballet under the direction of Stefanie Best and Mary Muller. After performing with the student company for three years, she attended Friends University, on scholarship, as a ballet major. Her training under Stan and Sharon Rogers, in Kansas, enabled her to dance professionally with the Charlottesville Ballet in 2016. Rachel is excited to be joining Stavna Ballet for her first year as an apprentice.

MANDY JAMES

Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Mandy grew up in Powhatan, Virginia, where she danced competitively at a local studio and performed roles including Clara and the Snow Queen in The Nutcracker. After attending Averett University in Danville, she began teaching English at Midlothian Middle School in Chesterfield County. In 2010, Mandy became one of Stavna Ballet’s founding company members. She is honored to perform with the company and has enjoyed lead roles such as the Lion in Wizard of Oz and the White Rabbit in Stavna’s production of Alice in Wonderland.

MORGAN NORGE

Morgan started dancing at the age of three and has loved it ever since. She danced at a neighborhood studio until the age of sixteen, when she came to the Stavna Ballet. The following summer, she studied at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York and performed at the Symphony Space Theater. She has performed in multiple shows with the Stavna Ballet including Carnival of the Animals, Snow White, and the Wizard of Oz. After spending one season as a trainee, Morgan was promoted to company member in 2015.

JENNIFER KLOTZ

Jennifer grew up dancing in her hometown of Allentown, Pennyslvania where she studied various styles of dance including Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary and Tap. Jen is a graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA where she earned her BFA in Modern dance performance under the direction of Donna Faye Burchfield. Upon graduation Jen moved to Richmond, VA and began her teaching career with Stavna Ballet in 2013. In addition to teaching at Stavna, Jen is an adjunct professor at John Tyler Community College and is a Barre fitness instructor in the Richmond area. She has had the pleasure of performing with the Stavna Ballet in their productions of Snow White, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and most recently has been cast as Peter in Peter Pan. 

RACHEL SEEHOLZER

Rachel Seeholzer was born and raised in Los Angeles, California where she first began her classical dance training.  She set her focus in ballet after high school and traveled to further her training in cities such as Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Charlotte and Richmond. Rachel began dancing professionally in 2014 and has had the pleasure of working with the Charlottesville Ballet, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet, and RVA Dance Collective. She has worked with acclaimed choreographers and teachers such as Daniel Duell, Sheila Rozann, Alonzo King, Patricia McBride, Suzanne Farrell, Kim Jones, Starr Foster, Colby Damon, and Maggie Small. In 2011 Rachel was given the opportunity to set a contemporary piece on the trainees and apprentices of the Charlotte Ballet, and continued choreographing in 2013 when asked to create the ballet production of The Nutcracker on the Degas Dance Studio in Encino, California. In the last year, Rachel again took a chance and created a classical ballet piece on the trainees of the Charlottesville Ballet. Rachel guested for Stavna Ballet in their 2017 production of Peter Pan, originating the role of Tiger Lily, and guested again in 2018 in Stavna Ballet’s production of Snow White as the Cardinal Bird. Rachel is excited to join Stavna Ballet in their first full season as a professional company for the 2018/2019 season.

Stavna Ballet Intensive

This summer intensive provides a two week session for advanced dancers to enrich their lives though Innovative dance education in a professional ballet environment. Our goal is to help nurture the love of dance through an exciting and progressive curriculum. In addition to teaching dance at the highest level, the outstanding faculty members of the Stavna Ballet will provide a nurturing backdrop to promote confidence and self-awareness.

August 5th- 16th 

The Stavna Ballet Intensive: Two levels for students ages 12-14 and 15-17 and  dancers ages 18-22 years old interested in trainee positions for the 2018/19 season. Classes will be held from 9:00am-4:00pm Monday-Friday

What to Expect 

 Dancers will begin each day with a ballet technique class, and will continue with pointe work, boys class, jazz, modern, contemporary and choreography. The dancers will also have the unique opportunity to have classes in yoga, pilates, nutrition, ballet terminology, dance history, and injury prevention to create a well rounded experience. On the last day of the intensive, dancers will have an in-studio performance to showcase their talent. Female dancers must be pointe proficient to attend the intensive.
